Four Winds is a large-scale geometric abstraction organized around a central point from which angular planes extend outward in four directions. The composition creates a strong sense of symmetry and perspective, suggesting an abstract architectural space that appears to open, fold, and recede beyond the surface.
Layered fields of muted olive green, deep blue-gray, earthy brown, taupe, and soft ochre shift subtly in tone across the painting. Schaefer’s finely worked linear and crosshatched surface gives the geometric forms an almost woven quality, while subtle gradients of color create depth and luminosity.
From a distance, the work feels structured and meditative, with the four converging forms drawing the eye toward its center. Up close, the intricate layering of lines and translucent color becomes more visible, revealing a richly textured surface that shifts with light and perspective.
